I'm putting my dog to sleep today.
Our sweet Hairy Snifferlumpus has had cancer lumps on her for a couple of years, A couple months ago, one burst open and we have been working to keep this deep chasm into her gut clean. When my mom died, somehow she got neglected and now we have reached a new level of terrible in the wound department. Even if we could heal this one, there are several more on her body waiting to rupture and she is almost 20, so the prognosis is this.
This has been a really interesting (?!?!) Spring. Death and injury...I thought that came in the Fall.
Happy Dog Heaven thoughts to Lilly.

(713 posts)My precious little 16 year old doggy died about 3 weeks ago. And I think I've cried for 2 of those weeks. She was at the vet for 4 days and we weren't sure what was wrong with her and the vet even thought she was improving but on the 4th day she passed. I was tore up most of the week not wanting to have to make that decision to put her to sleep, especially without knowing exactly what was wrong. I had a "talk" with her and asked her to please go if she wasn't going to get better, and about 15 minutes later the vet called and said she had passed. It's such a hard thing to do. My thoughts are with you and godspeed to little Lilly.

We had to have our 7-year-old Samoyed put to sleep because she had an inoperable, rapidly growing sarcoma tumor blocking her throat and pushing out one of her eyes. It seemingly came out of nowhere with horrible speed. She was so young. It broke our hearts.

I suspect that letting her lick the water in rain puddles and in a nearby stream may have exposed her to all kinds of yard chemicals.
I have a chemical-free yard, and I avoid cleaning chemicals for the sakes of my dog Penny, who is 2 years old, and my daughter's dog Bailey, who is 3. They are not allowed to drink from rain puddles or the stream. I will not allow them near other peoples' chemically treated lawns. And the two cats, Salem and Dinah, are not allowed outside, period.

I'm so sorry for what you're going through. The greatest love we can give them is to take on their suffering

(2,567 posts)Our pets love is beyond amazing. I just want to send you some good vibes. My kitties are 13 and what you are going through is coming nearer to the future than I want it to be. I am dreading it.
When my mom died it was almost more time consuming for me AFTER she died than when she was dying, which was intense. It is easy to overlook just about everything during and after that time.

(1,950 posts)Please know that you made a very courageous decision and one that was for Lilly's best. I know it may sound trite - but you gave Lilly lots of love and a good life - it comes through in your writing.
Also, just know that she is running around happy and healthy and waiting for the day you join her once again.
Blessings and Peace BlueToTheBone.

(27,137 posts)We just had to put our 13-year old longhair dachshund Blackie to sleep last Thursday. So I haven't gotten used to the silence yet either. I'm still looking for him to snuggle-up to me so I can rub his head when he used to come check on me in my office as a way of reminding me that I was ignoring his snack-time. And I miss his clicking toenails going across the kitchen floor. I'll have to eat my whole tuna sandwich now. I still look at the places where he used to be. The window where he kept vigil on the world. Protecting his humans from all danger.
Blackie had cancer too. And he struggled to be able to eat and keep it down as the days waned. We buried him in the back next to the garden and right in the space where he used to chase after and dig up moles in the backyard. Turn about is fair play I guess. I think he'd like the irony. We're gonna miss him. So I know that just like me, you've got an empty space that can never be filled-up quite like Hairy Snifferlumpus did.
But they tell me it gets better. Take care......
