Essex Witches, Wiccans, Druids, and Pagans prepare to celebrate sacred Samhain festival

Most of us prepare for Halloween by buying sweets in preparation for eager children demanding chocolate at our front door or new zany outfits for a big party or carving pumpkins.

But as October turns to November, thousands of Witches, Wiccans, Druids, and other Pagans across America, Canada, Europe, observe the sacred time of Samhain.

According to the pagan community, Samhain is the time when the veil between our world and that of the dead is at its thinnest.

Pronounced saah-win or saa-ween, and derived from the Old Irish language, Samhain is an ancient Gaelic celebration of the end of the harvest and the start of the coldest part of the year.
