In other religion news, we are reminded that it's often about control and keeping women in their place...
https://www.thecut.com/2019/03/notre-dame-mother-leggings-maryann-white-letter.html
Whites four boys were recently exposed to the troubling image of clothed female butts during Mass at the Basilica on the Notre Dame campus, she explained. A group of young women three? sixty? whos to say all clad in clingy Spandex and short tops sat in front of White and her brood, and some of them, truly looked as though the leggings had been painted on them. [*sign of the cross*]
I was ashamed for the young women at Mass. I thought of all the other men around and behind us who couldnt help but see their behinds. My sons know better than to ogle a womans body certainly when Im around (and hopefully, also when Im not). They didnt stare, and they didnt comment afterwards. But you couldnt help but see those blackly naked rear ends. I didnt want to see them but they were unavoidable. How much more difficult for young guys to ignore them.
...The letter, predictably, prompted a wave of backlash. The Notre Dame student group Irish 4 Reproductive Health organized a Leggings Pride Day, writing on the events Facebook page that while well-intentioned, Whites viewpoint perpetuates a narrative central to to rape culture in implying that womxn and girls are responsible for the actions and reactions of others.

trotsky
(49,533 posts)then that is totally not whataboutism because everyone should trust simplicable.com over some totally unreliable site like the Merriam Webster dictionary and besides I didn't *intend* to change the subject away from sexism in religion anyway, so there.

(7,530 posts)I am reminded of a comment made by a homophobe I knew. He was complaining about the televised SF Pride parade. He described his horror at seeing a man's naked butt.
"It was like being shot between the eyes! "

(36,900 posts)I hear this all the time from religionists as an answer to their obvious homophobia after their actions defy those words.

It's like someone saying, "This beer tastes like horse piss." Which calls for the question, "Really? You've tasted horse piss? How odd."

Lady, whatever you do, don't learn how to look at your sons' web browsing histories. I beg you!

(15,102 posts)Jesus was aware of this kind of problem, and he gave instructions on how to deal with it.
"And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire." Matthew 18 : 9

(12,344 posts)plucking one out won't solve the problem, so they might as well keep both and enjoy the scenery on the ride down.

(15,102 posts)After all, Jesus didn't go on to say, " ... unless you already have only one eye, in which case you are exempt."

(6,261 posts)That seems to be standard Catholic doctrine.
Seems a silly way to go through life. I'd have spent virtually every waking hour in the confession booth back during the days of my teenage priapism. Glad I didn't grow up Catholic.
