Related: About this forumWomen strive for larger roles in male-dominated religions
From the article:
Yet in most of the worlds major religions, women remain relegated to a second-tier status. Women in several faiths are still barred from ordination. Some are banned from praying alongside men and forbidden from stepping foot in some houses of worship altogether. Their attire, from headwear down to the length of their skirts in church, is often restricted.

34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
1 Timothy 2:
11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

(12,344 posts)If you think you have a God-given right to something, you do it with a clear conscience no matter who gets hurt. A woman with a God-given duty to submit is also less likely to stand up for herself. And your church community will say you both are doing the right thing.
But atheist misogynists are on their own. No God to salve their conscience or to provide the "I'm just following orders," excuse.

(49,533 posts)You help enable them by supporting the idea that the bible contains information from a god.
But since none of your can agree WHICH parts are god's, we have this mess where everyone picks and chooses and they're all equally justified because your god refuses to get involved. Or doesn't exist.

(25,185 posts)with liberal Jewish sects, and I guess that's also the case with liberal Christian sects, but perhaps there are a few that are not as bad as the Catholicism that I grew up with and later rejected.

(147,574 posts)is one of the worst offenders in this regard. The patriarchal hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has led the way in reducing women to minor roles, both within the church and outside of it. Its constant battle against women controlling their own reproductive choices is a model of suppression of women. And it is all done in the name of religion.
Of course, there are no women in leadership positions in the RCC, either. They are relegated to servile occupations within the church.
And all of that is supported by scripture, according to the RCC itself.
So, what do you propose be done about this travesty, guillaumeb?
