So, here's a strange twist. If you get caught as a priest sexually abusing children, you can switch to being a Boy Scout leader and go right on doing it? How odd this seems to me, but, here's the story:
https://www.abqjournal.com/1256546/boy-scouts-accused-of-negligence-in-abuse-lawsuit-involving-priests.html
Two former Albuquerque priests alleged to have participated in sex parties with children in the 1990s gained access to boys in another arena by becoming Boy Scout leaders, according to a new lawsuit.
{snip}
The lawsuit filed against the Boy Scouts and its New Mexico nonprofit organization contends that then-Catholic priests Robert Malloy and Ronald Bruckner were leaders in an officially sanctioned Boy Scout troop that operated out of Our Lady of Assumption parish through a charter with the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.
Both Bruckner and Malloy are on the Archdiocese of Santa Fes list of priests credibly accused of sexual abuse. Their names surfaced in a recent lawsuit that alleges the two took children to sex parties that were sometimes filmed.
{snip}
The case against the Boy Scouts alleges that the organization was negligent because it knew or had reason to know that Malloy and Bruckner had abused boys in their care at a time prior to, or during the time the plaintiff in the case was in their troop.

(36,900 posts)They are still going to be dealing with lawsuits for years over past negligence. However, they have made significant policy changes regarding screening of leaders, education of members, and rules about reporting and contact with scouts.

(147,572 posts)be trying to change things, though. I've never been a bit supporter of scouting. It always seemed too military-like for me. A lot of Boy Scout troops have been historically sponsored by churches, too, so they've had problems with excluding non-Christians over the years.

This would so simply logical.

(147,572 posts)The ones that don't are likely to face serious problems down the road. Now that such sexual assaults are more visible, tolerance for them has decreased to near zero.

(36,082 posts)you have to be fingerprinted so they can run a background check on you before you're approved for doing anything involving kids.
Much like being a teacher.
If a matter is handled internally, whether some priest boffing a pre-pubescent boy or embezzling money, that won't turn up on a background check if the guy wants to be a youth leader, teacher, or bookkeeper/financial manager--unless the background check includes talking to past employers or references. Even then, if it's kept confidential that may not come up during the phone check.

(1,341 posts)Adult that stepped foot on property of any of my scout camps. I was then inspected every year to make sure all background checks were documented. That and all the myriad if other state inspectors, national inspectors etcetera.
This is not new for the scouts.
