(12,200 posts)I go to church for the social, community service, and music aspects, and Im not tied to it. Ive found that there are many like-minded individuals there. Its where Ive met many of my political compadres.

(1,896 posts)It really seems like when I was younger, people were members of whatever denomination, usually a particular congregation, and that was just the way it was. Now there seems to be a lot more mobility. I'm not sure if that's actually happened, or if I'm just more aware of it now.

(12,200 posts)I enjoy going. I trust the people on the pastor nomination and selection committees will select someone who fits with our church community. If not, there will be people who leave, and I may be one of them. Several years ago (maybe 18-20 now), we had co-pastors who sounded good in the interviews and in the demo sermons they gave, but were much more conservative than they let on. Contracts are for 5 yrs. That was all they served for. Some of the conservative people that had joined our congregation left with them.
Oh well.....
I have a friend who has held administrative posts in our church almost as long as I've been going there (24 yrs). He says he looks at the Bible as guidelines (I said like the pirate code?) They are stories with some truth, written to be moral guidelines for their audience. The book has been rewritten over the years and adapted to whatever audience they are trying to influence at the time.

(36,900 posts)The reason Christians call gambling a sin is because it's competition for the collection plate, which is itself a bit of a gamble if you think about it much.
Meanwhile spousal abuse, child rape, and slavery still aren't sinful. Go figure.
