So, I've been to 47 usa states (lots of road trips with parents). A bucket list item is to have been to all 50, and these three are the ones left.
I plan to fly to Atlanta from L. A. and rent a car. Things I want to see:
Jimmy Carter Library, Atlanta
Plains
Savanah
Everglades
St. Augustine
Key West
Birmingham
Selma
Is there anything else you can suggest?
Can I do this in 10 days or so?
I hope to go in October. Any good fall color spots?
Thanks!!!

(179 posts)Even if you skip Key West that would be almost impossible to enjoy in ten days, unless you'd be content to just spend a couple hours at each destination

(6,761 posts)Late October might be OK. In any event, sounds like a cool trip.

(11,614 posts)If you leave off southern floriduh you might make it but there are some historical sites in Atlanta and Montgomery that you might want to include. Good luck.

(37,500 posts)Large stretches of the highway become parking lots. And Atlanta traffic cops are neither friendly nor trustworthy.
I grew up in AL and FL and have taught in GA. It's a little weird for me to hear that someone's been to HI and AK but not these three !

(22,753 posts)Just south Florida alone is worth 3 or 4 days. We spent a week there and did not do everything we wanted to do. One entire day was in the Everglades, another day was a trip to Dry Tortugas National Park ( which we loved.) We lost a full day of snorkeling to a bad storm so spent that full day in Key West,
You will want more than one day in Savannah too. It's a beautiful city with fabulous food, walking tours, and the historic waterfront district is fun!
Florida is really long. Be advised also that getting from Everglades to Key West will take much longer than it looks like on the map. Highway One is narrow and congested.

(5,649 posts)is a, long, slow ride from mainland Florida. Takes 3 or 4 hours barring an accident. Only one road, 2 lanes mostly. Getting back is the same. Accommodations are very expensive. Think $100 per night for a campsite 15 years ago. St Augustine is about 9 hours drive from the Everglades of South Florida. I'd stick to Georgia sites to not be constantly on the go and to enjoy your trip. Enjoy the journey!

I've been to Key West way to many times with out of state friends and it's now just a tee shirt shop haven for tourists. St Augustine is full of history and a neat Rum distillery tour if so inclined.
Miami and Hollywood beach broadwalk is a neat place for a walk and a bite to eat. You hear many different languages being spoken. Lots of fun and blue green waters...
