I visited it many years ago (at least 45 years) and it was before it's foundation had to be shored up, but it was a great tour. To see a great architect's concept come to life in a living space. Because of it's location over a waterfall, there were some geological problems in the foundation over time and it was closed temporarily while the foundation was repaired. Although I would love to see it again, I would love to see some of his other homes too.

Wright had a commission for a house design but had delayed working on it due to other assignments. He had visited the site for the house and had done some thinking about a design. He got a call from the customer who said he was in the area and would like to drop by for a visit. Wright had to scramble because he knew there would be questions about a design.

He quickly drew some sketches based on his brainstorming, thinking that they could serve as placeholders until he could put time into a real design.

The customer arrived and Wright showed him the sketches. The sketches were almost identical to what was eventually constructed. It's a testament to Wright's skill at imagining a design, thinking about it over time and being able to render his ideas onto paper quickly.

The House on the Rock in th Wyoming Valley, Spring Green, Wisconsin. I went there a couple times when I lived in the state. I wonder if the owners closed it to the public even though there is a massive museum on the property. I'm sure it was very expensive to maintain.

Thanks! I was going to look it up but I got distracted.

I'm 1100 miles from there but it's good to know it's still open. I haven't been to Taliesen, maybe next time I pass through there.

I lived in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin for a number of years, FLR is a regional star so I got a little familiar with his history by being a local at the time. House on the Rock is the only one I've toured, though.

There's also a small museum and a few suites that were left intact that you can tour. We really enjoyed our getaway weekend there. Tiny old-fashioned elevators--don't take tons of luggage!
