My mother insists we get it.
Covers all medical (up to $1 million), drugs, evacuation back to the states if needed.
We are planning two trips, 4 weeks total next year. Geoblue (Blue Cross/Blue Shield) has a policy, one year for $390. It does require a base health insurance policy.
Im thinking its a good idea, if nothing else it will stop her nagging.

(19,137 posts)Paid off when my mom was airlifted off the cruise and sent to a hospital in Bahamas for a week. Cruise insurance paid the 20,000 airlift and entire hospital stay including also being airlifted to ft Lauderdale hospital (2day stay). I shutter to think what the entire bill would be if we had to pay it.

(759 posts)Dad and I used to take a one week fishing vacation in northern Ontario. We would be on the boat for the entire day and not see another soul. Paid a couple of hundred bucks to rent a satellite phone, just in case.

(759 posts)First 5 years backpacking, the remainder fishing. Backpacking is a lot of work, and its hard to carry around a couple cases of beer.

(53,060 posts)trip. I got back all the money we'd paid the tour company and airline. The only thing non-refundable is the cost of the insurance.

Going forward, if ever I get to travel again, I will definitely purchase travel insurance.
