Related: About this forumAnyone ever used Turo for car sharing?
Going to Sarasota next month and regular car rental prices are through the roof. Like $700 a week for a tiny compact car.
Turo.com popped up and it's local people I assume that own cars and rent them out to people. Supposedly they deliver it to you give you the keys and then are there to pick it up when you want to drop it off. Each will tell you how many trips the car took what year is etc etc.
Seems so much more reasonable but of course afraid to take a chance

(19,137 posts)The thing with rental cars is you have option to use your insurance or companys insurance. Thats huge.

(42,770 posts)Rental was $594 for a compact putt-putt. Turo was showing me a Lexus for a total price of 390. Including 2000 miles and free delivery. What's stranger is it says that you pick up the keys to be a lockbox. Huh? Does that mean the car is in a parking lot somewhere? LOL
But I kind of gave up for now. I think because you couldn't really move forward without joining, uploading pictures of yourself, uploading your driver's license information, etc etc.
But * I think* insurance was probably extra because it listed an insurance co. I suspect that is x amount of day. Not sure how could be that much more though. Given when you rent a car normally you can add insurance for like $10 a day.

(15,016 posts)Have you thought about renting a car through Coscos? I'm thinking about getting a membership just for that purpose because I heard that they offer good rates.

(2,187 posts)Not all renters on Turo deliver or pick up and some of those that do charge extra for it. Your personal car insurance or rental benefits from your credit card will not apply for Turo most likely. Turo offers insurance of their own, but it does not cover interior or mechanical damage. That all being said, both times I used Turo things went smoothly and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

(42,770 posts)And mechanical? Meaning if you had a wreck and the engine got smashed up it wouldn't be covered? Yikes

(2,187 posts)I didn't have my kids with me at the time so I wasn't worried on the interior getting messed up. And for the mechanical side, if the engine was damaged in a wreck, that would be covered under the collision coverage. They don't cover mechanical damage like if I over revved the engine and blew it up or did burnouts and messed up the transmission or or something along those lines.

(42,770 posts)Somewhere out of town like at an airport? Or near home

(2,187 posts)The one was right next door to my hotel while I was in Las Vegas with my wife, so walking to pick it up and walking back after drop off wasn't an issue. We were staying at Aria and the owner lived in Veer Towers, which is like 300ft away according to google maps. The other time I took an Uber over to pick it up and back to drop it off, but I had it timed so I basically took the Uber there right from the airport, then dropped it off and took an uber from there back to the airport when I was flying back home. Pickup and drop off was at the owners house for that one.

(7,611 posts)I would go over the Turo insurance policy with a fine tooth comb and try to figure out who the insurance company actually is. And even then I wouldn't do it.
An insurance company really only needs two employees; One to cash all the premium checks, the other to deny all the claims.
