old Winchester 1894 25-35

good place to get ammo or do I have to start a new hobby? not really interested in doing it myself, as I am not that into shooting but I just received a rifle that belonged to my Grampa and I would like to have it be useful for the occasional chicken thief or whatever.

2. Ha! I just found that same page.

It seems to be in good shape and I doubt it has been shot in 30 years. I remember Grampa cleaning it after every use and taking good care.

I know a guy who is a smith, good reminder for me. I run into him in town every now and then. Will email his wife and see if we can meet sometime. I wonder if it is still rural enough around here to check out a rifle in the parking lot of the grocery store? Or would a SWAT team show up?

If you have any doubts, I would suggest making a call to a local law enforcement office to resolve any questions. I would also at all times handle as if loaded keeping the lever/breach in the open position and unloaded.

It might be considerate as well to check in with the management at the grocery.

"Chicken Thief?" That is funny. I shoot competitively and I do not know what cartridge that is. Try Snipershide. Many competitive shooters there who can point you in the right direction. Sounds like a collector's rifle. Good luck.

6. Sounds like a nice old rifle.

Given the unorthodox caliber and depending on what shape it's in, it's worth something if you ever choose to part with it. The .25-35 is an adequate round for anything up to deer-sized game (chicken thieves included); I'm guessing you're dealing with the barrel-mounted metal sights the gun came with, which will limit your accurate shooting to roughly 50 yards or thereabouts. Save the empty brass casings from your shooting sessions for use in future reloads. Enjoy.

7. It may be esoteric, but it's quite a respectable round for varmints

And those open iron sights could be considered a plus for a quick shots at a modest distances. The downside being the target would be in the next county before the lever action cowboy rifle could fire a third or fourth round, and one of the main reasons why the old fart ranchers with bum eyes are now favoring the magazine loaded semi-automatic rifles for varmints.
