Shane Thomas was by himself at Tony Vey Meadows about six miles up Forest Road 5160, said Sgt. Nick Pallis with the Union County Sheriffs Office. Thomas told officers he had shot the bear with his rifle and had walked into a thicket to retrieve the animal.
Except the bear wasnt dead. It attacked Thomas, who was unable to reach for his pistol and forced to fight back by kicking and yelling. Thomas was able to get away and drive himself back to the highway despite puncture wounds to his legs and backside, Pallis said.
Thomas texted his mother about what happened, and she called 9-1-1. Pallis said he paged Search and Rescue, though before they could respond his deputy actually passed Thomas on Highway 244. Thomas followed medics back to Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande, where Pallis said he was treated and released.

2. Bring at least one person who runs slower than you.

(109 posts)Saw this on another website and thought it to be relevant to this discussion.
Park rangers say you should wear little bells and carry pepper spray when in bear territory. THe bells are to keep you from accidentally surprising the bear napping off after stuffing itself with berries, nuts, or whatever. They also say you can identify what kind of bear is in the area by looking at bear scat (aka turds yes, they DO sh*t in the woods!). Black bear scat will be full of seeds, insect parts, stems from berries, etc. Grizzly bear scat will be full of little bells and smell like cayenne pepper

(7,981 posts)The little story you've posted is commonly found on pro-gun sites. They like to mock normal people who enjoy nature and the outdoors without carrying a firearm. In this incident, carrying a firearm and using it to hunt a wild animal was the reason he was attacked. So your tale of bells & pepper spray is irrelevant and simply displays the ignorance of pro-gunners.

(109 posts)That shit ain't funny. If the guy had been hunting bears with pepper spray instead of a firearm it would have turned out much more better. Thanks for straightning me out SecMo.

(17,502 posts)If not, it is hypocritical to knock someone eats what he hunts. It is actually more honest and more ethical than the guy that pays the factory farm industry to kill their food for them. This doesn't apply to rich trophy hunters like Trump's kids.
Have you ever wondered where the funds come from for wildlife habitat restoration and bring many species back from the brink of extinction, including wolf reintroduction in the West?
