Me-- I don't dream too big but I'd love a smaller Harley with all the trimmings.

(19,309 posts)I've had Harleys as did my dad before me and I loved them, but now I see a certain bad to the bone geek factor in the old Hondas from the '60s.
Back then the slogan was "you meet the nicest kind of people on a Honda", and that is more true now than ever. Imagine the crowd that will gather in a gaggle of factory fresh Harleys, all looking vaguely similar, when you pull up on a truly unique symbol of the past:
A Dream rider can wheel up and look over at the HD next to him and say "Nice Harley, what year is it?" Hahaha
Both my sons had HDs too when they started out riding years ago. Because of the conformity and proliference of weekend warriors, the oldest now has a Buel and my youngest rides a Ducati.

(13,200 posts)a Honda and a Hells Angel ride. Now I ride a BMW R1200R and on the backroads of NJ drivers pull to the side and wave me past. I don't know if they feel intimidated or just assume I want to go much faster than them.

(19,309 posts)Often when I'd stop at a light dressed in leather with my ponytail splayed across by back, I'd see the driver next to me reach back and lock their door. As if I'd put the kickstand down, go over and swing their door open, and drag them out in traffic (for whatever reason) before the light changed.
It would probably still happen to many bikers, but they have automatic locks these days. The 305 Dream would likely just garner a smile and a thumbs up, especially at my age now. I think a lot of "truly fine citizens" still get nervous when they see that MC headlight in their rear view though.
I haven't ridden in decades and I now focus on my first love in high school, a Triumph TR6. I had a TR3 when I graduated, and I've been through a couple Spitfires in the past 20 years, but to say the last, no one is intimidated. Indeed, I get quite the opposite so I guess maybe you can be glad when drivers yield to you.

And my old 2stroke Yamaha RD-400 just popped back into my head, haven't thought about that screamer in years.
My buddy had one of those three cylinder Kawasaki 2 stroke 750's, talk about an EVIL machine, go like hell, bad brakes and iffy handling, it got banged up more than I few times, he offered it to me and I declined, probably why I'm still alive.

(19,309 posts)..then went to Japanese bikes for a while because they were affordable and fast. Bang for buck. The 500 Kaw was one I always liked but was a bit afraid of. That two stroke sounded angry. The 750 was the fastest accelerating motorcycle engine in the day.
The Honda 305 Dream just exhibits classic beauty. No one would mistake this for a cookie cutter new bike:

(1 post)Mine would be a BMW Dakar dual sport bike. They get around 70 mpg and are made really good. The are also really good looking, and can perform on almost any surface. You can usually find one in pretty decent condition for around $4,000-$5,500.

1992: The $50,000, oval-piston NR750 is released. Although not a VFR per se, this ultra-sophisticated superbike is still considered the ultimate expression of Hondas V-4 sportbike philosophy. All my old rides I would just love to have back, there were lots more but those were my favorites.
Then there's the Honda 1300 Interstate? I fell in love with when I saw one in blue.

I already have a 1928 Model "AA" flatbed fully restored, a 1947 Ford Super Deluxe 4 door in black fully restored and my 1998 triple black Mustang Cobra Convertible, I may not ever buy another car but those three will do in a pinch.

(831 posts)I'm on the short side, so have always had limited choices in production bikes, but never had the $$$$ to just get a custom bike.
I don't want a 200 mph rocketship, or a cushy touring bike, just something to get around town when the weather's nice that has clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic. This is just one of many, many nice customs being made - most of them in Europe, it seems.
