From the beer & pretzel games of Axis & Allies and Talisman, to the hard-core games of the grognards (myself) like Advanced Squad Leader or Panzer Leader to the (again, myself) arcane, dusty recesses of D&D.
I'd pay folding money to see a D&D Editions flame war on DU... it might be a first here.
Never knew this group existed. Now I do; though it seems pretty geared towards console/PC gaming (granted-- that's where the money is, and the crowds do follow).

(3,863 posts)But I used to run a TinyMUSH online Roleplaying game (White Wolf). My game was based in New Orleans. We had Vampires, Werewolfs, Mages, and Mortals. Some Voodoo flavor too.

(25,586 posts)I play everything tabletop; boardgames, wargames, miniatures games, dexterity games, RPGs, Magic the Gathering, even collectible dice games.
I started in the 80s with AD&D, branched out into Squad Leader and the whole board wargame scene, and it grew from there. The 90s were a blur of minis and MtG, and in the 2000s I made the leap back into Dungeons and Dragons with the release of 4th edition (still the best.) Euro-style games got me back into boardgaming in a big way as well, and the recent success of tightly-designed and quicker-playing wargames like the COIN system from GMT has increased my play in that genre.

(25,586 posts)old man heart as the game that got the whole thing going, but gawd thats a clunky old system compared to modern gaming. I will admit that while we loved 4th edition D&D we did stop playing that as well, switching over to teh new hotness of Dungeon World and other PBTA variants.

(4,033 posts)...and even I was taken in and won over by the graphics and images in the 3.0/3.5 era books (you should see my library).
I also enjoyed the 3.75 Pathfinder version by Paizo, and have recently stared reading the rules to Starfinder.
It's all good.

I have to kindly disagree with your assessment of 4th Edition. I read it once and knew immediately it was not for me. I do enjoy the heck out of 5th Edition.

It's getting tougher all the time to find people who have the time to play a table top game.
I'll start your D&D flame war:
I played D&D before it was 'advanced'!
With Real lead figures!
Oh, and in confession, I have a never-played box-shelf copy of Civilization.

(25,586 posts)I had an old red box of Basic (a friend even had the old original game with the fighting man class, but honestly. . . ) that my parents got me for Christmas at the same time they got me the AD&D books. Being eleven years old I naturally assumed advanced meant better and so never paid much attention the the Basic stuff. A lot of old players assure me it was the better, cleaner system.

(6,307 posts)I did play the original D&D back in the '70s once or twice, but mainly played SPI/Avalon Hill wargames until I went to college. Afterward I picked up the wargames again, mainly World in Flames, Air Superiority and similar air combat games, but have pretty much stopped those (and am slowly selling off my collection). I also started D&D with version 3.5 as a way to do things with the family (my wife and sons were playing tons World of Warcraft back then); this past weekend we played some 5th Edition.
I get a lot of flak from my family over my D&D characters, because I tend to prefer simple-minded, combat-oriented characters (e.g. my current half-orc barbarian). They want me to be a spellcaster, but I am not really interested in figure out the ins and outs of magic. Also, isn't the point of role-playing games that you get to be someone different? I think too much in real life, so I prefer to play someone who doesn't think much at all.
