Norwegian shooter threatens hunger strike to get a PS3 in prison

Anders Breivik, the 35-year-old right-wing extremist who is serving a 21-year sentence for killing 77 people in a 2011 rampage, is threatening to go on a hunger strike to protest what he calls the "torture"-like conditions that he's endured during his confinement. Among his demands: an upgrade from his current PlayStation 2 to a PlayStation 3 "with access to more adult games that I get to choose myself."

Yes, seriously.

In a copy of a November complaint to prison authorities sent to AFP, Breivik, who is held separately from other prisoners for his protection, complained that his entertainment choices are being limited differently than other inmates.

"Other inmates have access to adult games while I only have the right to play less interesting kids games," Breivik writes. "One example is Rayman Revolution, a game aimed at three-year-olds."

In his 2012 trial, Breivik famously said he had "trained" for his attacks using games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, though he also practiced frequently at a target range. He also admitted to an obsession with World of Warcraft in his testimony .....

3. I read about this earlier today...

I actually spent a little time trying to figure out some more about the Norwegian prison system and how the inmates live. It's a fascinating way to go about the problem of criminals and what should be done... I'm not aware of anyone else attempting what they are doing. It's a shame we won't have anything like it here anytime soon... We Americans love to have our prisoners punished rather then rehabilitated... But it does seem like it works.

I can't believe how he's treated...I understand humane treatment for rehabilitation purposes but this guy killed 77 mostly young people and doesn't deserve a 486/33 with Zorg on it, much less "his choice of adult games" and a PS3.

A luxury prison containing en-suite bathrooms, £1 million Banksy-style art and windows without bars, has been built in Norway.

Each inmate gets a private cell with mini-fridge, flat-screen TV and even a private en-suite bathroom and barless windows - because they let in more sunlight.
Then for every 12 to 15 rooms there is a top-spec kitchen with stainless steel work tops and lounge areas complete with IKEA-style sofas and coffee tables.
To cap-off their stay at Halden the prisoners are also able to use a gym, complete with rock-climbing wall, a music studio, and a luxury library.

Re-offend? If you're homeless, it sounds like a nice place to hang! It might motivate those without flat screens and gym access to "offend" just to get the perks...!

7. Believe it or not Norway has the lowest reoffender rate in all of Europe

To Americans their system sounds ridiculous because it is so much more lenient than ours, but their system actually works a lot better. Their reoffender rate is only 16% which is the lowest in Europe and far lower than the US. Instead of focusing on punishment they focus on rehabilitation, they treat the inmates like people in order to teach them how people should be treated and it works. They come out of prison better people than they went in.

I actually think Norway's system should be a model for the world to follow, it may seem crazy to some because it is so far different than what we are used to but it is also far more effective than what we are used to.
