College Football Playoff expansion talks inch forward

DALLAS (AP) — The latest meeting on expanding the College Football Playoff wrapped up without a resolution Wednesday as the people involved agreed to keep talking.

CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock said there remains a strong consensus among the management committee, comprised of the 10 major college football conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director, to expand the four-team playoff field.

But how and when? A proposed 12-team model remains at the heart of the discussions and there is still hope it can be implemented for the 2024 season. Which conferences would be ensured access to the field is still up for debate.

“I thought there was a chance we’d get to the end today,” Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said. “We didn’t and there were good and appropriate reasons why we didn’t. There are people in the room that are differently situated and they therefore have different perspectives. And they were healthy discussions. I think we made good progress, but we aren’t done.”

1. They ruined New Years Day. What used to be the greatest football day of the year. I never cared

about having a playoff.

Last New Years Day, I decided I should be watching football and didn't even know what games were on. I start watching one and they're talking about all the top draft prospects not even bothering to play in their team's games. It's so far removed from what we had back in the 70's, it's no wonder I barely give a shit any more.

Star player just sitting out because of their draft prospects. Either the game is a crock or they are. They expect the schools fans to travel and buy tickets and that crap happens. That has nothing to do with what I ever thought a football team was about. I was lineman of the year on my high school team.

I get in this dudes bowl game pool every year. If I'm still in it when New Years Day rolls around, I might watch.

2. What ruined New Year's Day was the Rose Bowl's exclusive contract

with the Pac Eight and the Big Ten. More years than not, the two best college teams didn't face each other because of it.

4. Rose Bowl has always been about money. Not about the best team.

I attended a large university with a well known football team.

No matter how badly the team played in any given year, they always played in a Bowl game after the holidays. Tons of money from alumni, TV, and branded merchandise.

Everyone on campus just shook their heads, but we understood the financial aspects of college football quite well.

3. In reality, they are probably arguing about how to split up the increased profits

5. Take away the ranking system and you take away the need for playoffs

Never understood the ranking system anyway. It's subjective, and thus controversial. Is it not enough to be just a Big 10 champion? SEC champion? PAC 12 Champion?

But as long as there ARE Rankings, do it right. Make it for as many team needed to keep it fair and equitable. Broadcast some semifinals on New Years Day if possible.

I agree with Irish_Dem: its all about the money. And people get nutty when money is at stake.

7. I would like a system that gives mid majors a fair shot

Just putting the Big Ten or SEC champion doessnt do that and often times you get teams better than the conference champion like you would if Iowa won the Big 10 championship.
