Related: About this forumRob Gronkowski retired today.
Probably starts the countdown to Canton. I can think of greater Tight Ends from reading about some and watching some, truly don't know how Gronkowski match up to Mackie, or Winslow, but he seemed to be on par with or a little better than Ditka. Regardless, he has been the most dominant Tight End of his playing years, a bruiser that often had players come after him equally hard, hence his injury issues. But even with injuries, he leaves with 3 rings and as the second highest playoff scorer in NFL history.

(33,643 posts)I know the GOAT Jerry is #1 ... you're saying Gronk is 2nd all time out of all positions? Really?
I would NOT have guessed that. I'd have thought like Emmitt, or Franco, or Freddie B or ... a whole buncha other people. Even at TE I'd have guessed Tony Gonzalez had the most PO scores.
Anyways, kinda sad to see him go, even though I'm not a Pats fan.

(31,261 posts)but he never crossed them much. Also, Gronkowski played in more Super Bowls than Emmitt did and was always Brady's number one target once he joined the Patriots.

(33,643 posts)Obviously Kickers dominate the top of the chart, but of skill position players it looks like it goes (this is based on memory of who's a kicker and who's not):
1) Rice
2) Thurman Thomas & Emmitt Smith
4) Franco Harris
5) Marcus Allen
6) Terrell Davis
7) Ricky Watters
8) John Stallworth
9) John Riggins
10) Rob G.

Which means he's the #1 tight end, unless I missed one thinking they're a kicker. Possible! Still very impressive. Good company.
He's tied for the 2nd most TD receptions in the playoffs though with Stallworth, so that may've been the stat you read, just found that one on there.

Look at 27 ... look at those players that are tied ... with STEVE FREAKING YOUNG. Dude's a damn QB, man! Those aren't passes ... those are TD's ... and those are freaking STARS he's tied with.

(813 posts)If Gates also retires this year, it will be interesting to see who goes first, since I can't see two TEs getting in the same year.

(31,261 posts)Smart move on his part. He is said to have been smart with his money, he can leave with his health. Plus, if he keeps his nose clean (no reason to think that he won't), he is an advertiser's dream. He should be one of those players (Michael Jordan, Joe Montana, Shack, ect) that make a mint from post career endorsements.

(31,261 posts)I sentence you to one month of studying the Ideal Gas Law. And using something from the movie "The Man in the Ironmask", study it until you love it.
