Moon Valley junior Carlos Sanchez's death 1st in Arizona football since 2013
High school football players dying from catastrophic injuries are rare, but "one is too many," the director of the Arizona Interscholastic Association said on Monday.
Phoenix Moon Valley junior running back/linebacker Carlos Sanchez, 16, died over the weekend after collapsing on the field late in a game against Glendale Cactus on Friday night.
The official's report to the AIA said that Sanchez landed on the ground and hit his head.
"It was a clean play," said David Hines, AIA's executive director. "There was no penalty. It's just a tragic accident.
"We feel for his family. That's an unfortunate thing that he lost his life playing. Just a horrible thing to have to through. It's just a terrible situation."
It was the first death in Arizona high school football since 2013, when Keams Canyon Hopi senior Charles Youvella suffered a head injury on a pass play, falling to the ground after a tackle during a 2A state playoff game.
He died two days later.
