Rams chose to play 49ers in Australia to neutralize a S.F. advantage
"Home" teams, which the Rams will be in Melbourne, can request teams they would prefer to play in NFL international games.
The 49ers have enjoyed a decided home-field advantage at SoFi Stadium, which has become known as “Levi’s South” for its red-and-gold takeovers. Rams QB Matthew Stafford has often had to use a silent count due to the din created by visiting 49ers fans, which presumably won’t happen at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
That trip is the main reason the 49ers will be traveling an NFL-record 38,000 miles this season. Add another international game to the mix, too: Mexico City, against the Miami Dolphins.
