San Francisco Chronicle / 8-5-24
Nearly two weeks and 10 training-camp practices later, the (contract) situation has deteriorated as Aiyuk continues his quest to land an extension. With negotiations stalled, the 49ers have worked out the frameworks of deals for Aiyuk with the Patriots and Browns, NBC Sports Bay Area reported. The next step: Aiyuk, 26, who has reportedly been seeking a deal averaging around $30 million annually, will see if he can come to terms with either team on an extension.
The 49ers would reportedly receive a wideout and draft-pick compensation from the New England or Cleveland. The Patriots would likely include former 49ers wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, 29. The Browns could fit Aiyuks contract under the salary cap if Pro Bowl wide receiver Aamari Cooper, 30, was dealt to the 49ers, Cleveland.com has noted.
The 49ers have been negotiating with Aiyuk with the future in mind. In 2025, they have $301.3 million in salary cap liabilities the 2024 salary cap is $255.4 million and that figure doesnt include a contract extension for Pro Bowl quarterback Brock Purdy that figures to exceed $50 million annually.

Make the trade. WR is the most over-rated position in football. Aiyuk plays well but that money is needed elsewhere. It would be a typical blunder for the Browns to fall for it, BTW, but that's how things roll with them.

(5,767 posts)It's ridiculous how these players turn into prima donnas after one or two good seasons. It wasn't that long ago that he was in the dog house for his lacklustre play.
I'm sorry, but I'm fed up with the attitudes of many of today's young players.

(31,798 posts)a one-dimensional running offense run by an over-priced, under-performing quarterback. As "The Guy" he'd be double-teamed constantly.

(25 posts)I agree with you. The 49ers need to prioritize their salary cap situation and making a trade for Aiyuk could be a smart move. $30 million annually is a steep price to pay for a wide receiver, especially when you have other key players like Brock Purdy to consider. Getting a wideout and draft picks in return could be a great way to replenish their roster and set themselves up for future success. And yeah, the Browns do have a history of making questionable moves, so it wouldn't surprise me if they fell for it!

(31,798 posts)$76 million guaranteed. I'm a bit surprised, though I understand first round pick WR Pearsall has been battling injuries.
Pundits in S.F. are already saying Deebo Samuel will be a "short-timer" with Purdy next on the jackpot list.
