Travis Kelce's bump of Andy Reid

Furious at not being on the field for the 1st & goal play when Pacheco fumbled and turned the ball over to the 49ers, Kelce ran up to head coach Andy Reid screaming and bumping the portly older man almost hard enough to knock him off his feet.

I understand it's a very emotional game with highly competitive players, but I thought what Kelce did was inexcusable. The Chiefs probably wouldn't have made it to multiple Super Bowls if not for Andy Reid.

But the incident has nothing to do with politics, and everything to do with being a mature adult and good teammate.

Character is revealed in the heat of the moment. Coach Reid deserves a sincere apology, and I hope he got one.

He's undoubtedly used to having dozens of toddlers in tantrum mode, yet trapped in the bodies of massively built testosterone-surging adult male athletes.

Taylor pounding a drink
What Kelce wore off the team bus

I sense this needs to be addressed now verses if it becomes to late... Now is the opportunity to process concerns...That's how I look at it...It would be the healthy thing to do...acknowledge ones shortcomings and work on it..

Believe he can, everything I've seen of him off field suggests he's a mellow person.

When the Eagles were failing to execute and play their own game as their season tanked, he kept shaking his head on the bench, mostly. He was playing well while the others were plain failing. Not much else he could do to help.

Travis is different. If anyone can figure things out, it is Reid. Reid knew Travis was different the day he drafted him. Between the Kelce's and Reid they have stuff worked out. Having said that, you cannot get physical with your coach in front of the world, no matter what is happening. They will work it out, but Travis should be on his heels about this.

Reid won. This won't be Travis's favorite KC memory. Bad moments usually get forgotten when you win, though.

If he’s ok with doing this in public, what may he be capable of in private.

Super Bowl LVIII ended with a triumph for the Kansas City Chiefs, a feat that colored all of the moments leading up to the big win with rose-colored glasses. The team played with a passion that at one point escalated to the height of Travis Kelce almost knocking over head coach Andy Reid, who the tight end seemingly believed made a bad call in pulling him off the field during the second quarter. But Reid is looking back at Kelce’s Super Bowl sideline shove as a product of the drive that led them to victory.

“The part I love is that he loves to play the game, and he wants to help his team win,” Reid told reporters following the Chief’s overtime win. “It’s not a selfish thing, that’s not what it is, and I understand that. So, as much as he bumps into me, I get after him, and we understand that.”

-snip-

“He keeps me young,” the 65-year-old coach joked during the post-game interview, adding: “He tested that hip out. He caught me off balance — normally, I’d give him a little bit, but I didn’t have any feet under me.”

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes chalked the moment up to an example of the connection Reid has built with his team. “Everybody loves the game, everybody wants to compete,” he said. “Coach Reid wants to compete as well, you watch out or you might get a little bit too. That’s the mentality we’ve always had and that’s how we can win this kind of game.”

From what both Reid and Mahomes say about "a little bit" - using those words to describe what happened - it isn't unusual and Reid might do the same thing.

Without evidence to the contrary, I accept they feel that way in private as well -- though I expect there were words to the effect of don't ever do that again.

On Kelce's part, an apology and contrition were called for IMO.

There's no bad blood between Travis Kelce and Andy Reid following the Kansas City Chiefs' 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58 on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium. Kelce was asked about his sideline altercation with Reid during the game, and the star tight end told ESPN, "Imma keep it between us unless my mic'd up tells the world. I was just telling him how much I love him." Reid added of the incident on the CBS broadcast: "He keeps me young. ...He tested that hip out. He caught me off balance. Normally I'd give him a little bit, but I didn't have any feet under me."

And for what it's worth, Kelce approached Reid a few minutes after the outburst and hugged him, according to The Athletic's James Boyd and Amos Morale III. Reid then patted him on the back.

This man shoved his older coach, raged in his face and then hugged him after. Just the raging in his face is abusive behavior that society has normalized but is very traumatic.
And Kelce's behavior?
Sound familiar?
Typical abuser behavior.
And you know who Reid sounds like? The abused partner making excuses. "He didn't mean to hurt me," while we all saw that he came very close to falling
Red flags all over this. I work with victims of domestic violence and yesterday these women were shaken up about this because they recognize the pattern. Kelce did this in public, in front of millions, getting physical with is coach. No excuse for this ever. And what would he do in private, if Taylor crosses him.
I get Kelce is on our side politically, but I hoped we were better than Trumpers, who defend everything everyone on their side does. I hoped.
