Maglock bike pedals lock in a new way to cycle

Anyone who has ever “clipped in” to their bike pedals knows those few seconds of panic when it’s time to stop — or you are about to crash — and you’re still trying to perfect that specific twist and pull release.

David Williams, 30, knows that pain literally. He is an avid mountain biker, and has had too many bumps — where his feet came off the pedals, which meant his body came down hard on the crossbar. When he decided to swap that pain for clipping in, though, he came back with more scrapes and bruises than usual.

“Oh, yeah, those first few times I crashed. I even ended up sliding through a cactus once,” he said.

After his experience, he decided there had to be a better option. So he went to work tinkering.

I always used them but I never tightened the straps down. That allowed me to stop quickly if I had to and avoid patches of cactus or broken glass or whatever, while still allowing me to pull up as well as push down while pedaling.

The things I never bothered with were the special shoes that you had to take off if you needed to walk.

I wear mountain bike shoes, and have no problem walking, since they are designed to do both. Cyclocross riders do a lot of running:

Before switching to cycling shoes, I used velcro straps like these:

...which bridge the gap between "won't let go" and "don't let you use the upstroke for power." Under enough stress, the velcro lets go. There are a number of variations on the velcro strap idea.

Clipless pedals need to be adjusted, just like ski bindings. Most of the problems from "can't unclip" to "didn't unclip in an accident" are from failing to set the release tension properly.

What I found when I finally switched to clipless pedals is that my bike handling is MUCH better in hairy situations in order to avoid an accident, since my feet are not going to slip off of or out of the pedals, and you can do things like jump curbs with both wheels much easier than with straps.
