Bicycling metaphor and the winds of change

Yesterday (Saturday) was the 1st group ride when the start temps were in the 40s and a strong NNE wind. I seldom do this Saturday ride because of too many hot dogs (uber competitors) . I prefer a ride on Friday mornings that is not so driven. That said I like to do at least one group ride per week.

We have a ride Marshall who leads us out. On this Saturday ride he reins in everyone until the group is filled and then he lets them go. He does not go with the rest and I like riding with him. So for 22 miles he and I fair flew with the wind at our backs. Those young Turks must've be nearing light speed. At our turn around we assisted one guy with a flat and then started back into the wind. 2 miles into the return another rider had a mechanical problem and we helped get him on his way.

For the trip back to our start we were a pace line of 2. I would be on WMB's wheel enjoying being out of the wind and then I would do the work at the front. We did this all the way back.

So here's how I think this applies to the new situation we find ourselves. For 8 years we were riding with the wind now that has turned around and it is in our faces. We can whine and do nothing or we can help those in trouble and work together to continue progressing. There is an added benefit, while working to do the good you can in a time of adversity there is a growing sense of optimism- We can get through this becomes to we can do this.
