With the storm coming, it was definitely time for a ride.

(62,444 posts)I was wearing Smartwool socks, a pair of thermal tights, a long sleeve jersey and a windbreaker.
My feet had still been getting cold, even with shoe covers, because with clipless pedals, you still have a metal connector to the exposed pedals, which makes a great heat sink.
What I found is that sticking a pair of these under the insole of the shoes does the trick:
Happyslug's winter riding thesis is bang on. Up until recently, I had been over-layering, sweating, and then getting cold from being wet.

(19,459 posts)I was amazed you filmed it with a hand held camera, especially the off road segment. I'd have been plowing into any number of things.

(62,444 posts)...I started riding a few years ago to give my legs something to do in the summer, in order to keep up with my kids on skis in the winter.
But at this point, it's become a four-season sport...

(62,444 posts)...is located directly adjacent to the Philadelphia International Airport and Interstate-95. It is located in Tinicum, Pennsylvania and is named for the John Heinz the ketchup heir and first husband of Theresa Heinz-Kerry.
I had never been back there, and found out about halfway through that it was too wet for slick tires (28x700 Continental Gator skins). It's a cinder trail, though, so it was firm beneath the water and slush (and I wasn't digging a rut in mud).
It is just north of the Commodore Barry Bridge (the big steel one), which crosses the Delaware River into New Jersey at Chester, Pennsylvania.
For the rides I like, a hybrid bike (Giant Escape) is best suited for getting a good roll on pavement while still being able to go off-road once in a while.
(the sequences are Wilmington DE, Christina River waterfront; Chester PA beneath the Commodore Barry Bridge; the JHNWR; and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge between Philadelphia and Camden NJ)
