Tim Lincecum – even in a hoodie – creates intrigue

He’s a player that fascinates, intrigues, infuriates, more than arguably any other.

And doesn’t play.

Even without taking the mound, without taking off his black hoodie, not even once in this postseason, Tim Lincecum is still attracting attention. Without pitching, he’s already creating national headlines. Which he surely hates. If and when he does pitch he will be one of the biggest stories of the postseason.

Before Tuesday’s Game 1, there was quite a stir in the press box when Lincecum was missing from the pregame introductions. He wasn’t lined up on the baseline with the rest of his teammates – you can always tell him by the black hood pulled over his head. When it was reported on twitter, speculation went up. Was Lincecum protesting Bruce Bochy’s decision not to play him? Was he ill? Had Fox told him not to wear his hoody? One national reporter actually reached out to Lincecum’s agent, he was so alarmed by the missing No. 55. When the Giants relief pitchers all went out to the bullpen in right field, Lincecum wasn’t with them.

But by the first inning, Lincecum was back in his customary position, perched on the dugout railing, head covered by a hood,celebrating his team’s early runs. By the end of the first he went out to the bullpen, where he watched the proceedings.

No protest. No illness. Just Timmy on Timmy Time.

1. I snagged a Lincecum Bobblehead at a game a few years ago, not sure if I still have it.

I'll have to check! I gave it to my mom, then mom and dad died last year, not sure if we kept it or what.
