'A long time coming': Dodgers finally retire Valenzuela's No. 34

To most Los Angeles Dodgers fans, No. 34 is more than two digits put together. It’s a symbol.

A symbol of hope.

A symbol of representation.

A symbol of pride.

And now that symbol will forever be attached to Fernando Valenzuela as the Dodgers announced this past Saturday they will retire the pitcher’s No. 34 in August.

“It’s a long time coming,” Tecolotes Dos Laredos general manager Cuitlahuac Rodriguez said.

It is an appropriate honor for arguably the most impactful Dodger in Los Angeles franchise history. The team’s fans — ones Valenzuela helped garner — have finally had their voices heard, concerning the situation.
