(70,136 posts)That's the problem. The guys who are stuck on sabremetrics seem to be more outraged than those who do stats and the eye test.
The guy had 3500 hits. How many guys were that much better?
And, the problem with the purist stat guys is that they look at fielding metrics and then exclude the offensive numbers as a result. So, there were better shortstops in the field. How much better? How much impact did their superior defense have? And, if they were 250 hitters, how much more important was it to hit 315 and still be good enough to play shortstop for a major league team for 22 years?
And don't get me started on WAR. According to WAR, Bernie Williams was a better player for the Yanks than Jeter. Bernie was a fine player, but the statistic is automatically suspect when that occurs. Check out the formula for WAR. It's all over the internet. I ahve serious mathematical objections to it.
