The team is paying $30,679,595 in penalties.
This is BEFORE adding Scherzer and Turner to the payroll. There is no MLB rule to stop them.
And Rob Manfred wonders why attendance suffers in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Miami, Oakland, etc.

(37,826 posts)I'm guessing the bean counters got this figured out. Looks like the Red Sox are playing the same game, but they aren't confident about defeating the Astros and advancing to the World Series.
A little off topic, but Astros related: The two teams with highest winning percentage in the entire MLB, the Astros and the Giants, face off tonight in San Francisco. Astros Skipper, Dusty Baker (Jr) managed the Giants for ten years so he will be received well.
One could make the argument this meetup will be a preview of the 2021 World Series.

(31,803 posts)Thats how they pay for it. Red Sox are over by a little, according the link. Its just morally and ethically wrong - in sport for L.A. to abuse the system as they do. I hope this bites them in the ass like Bauer did, of course.
Looking forward to this series.

(37,826 posts)I first became aware of it when they sucked Jason Giambi away from the Oakland A's. All the big market teams do it....and yeah, it sucks, but until they establish a salary cap with teeth, nothing is going to change.
