There used to be 2, then 4, then 8, then 10, then 12, now 16!

I'm talking about how many baseball teams will go to the postseason (I refuse to call it "playoffs" - that's for football).

Isn't that way too many? Don't get me started on 7 inning double headers or putting a runner on 2nd for extra innings. Get off my lawn! (But the DH should be in the NL. )

I agree, wholeheartedly. But then I've been pissed since 1969 brought in divisional play. rsdsharp Jun 2021 #1

I hate the Mighty Manfred (Captain Kangaroo fans will get this reference) rules. That’s what happens when you make someone who doesn’t like baseball the commissioner.

The doubleheaders, extra innings and even the friggin’ DH — all in the name of “keeping players healthy.”

Protecting big-money ratings investments is more like it.

Postseason is being cheapened. Some could argue it’s a bone thrown to small markets that don’t have the roster depth to win divisions or traditional wild cards. Maybe so. But you can be sure MLB and television root for the usual large market suspects.

They are going back to 10 teams this year. It was 16 last year. I don't think it ever was 12. But... it will probably go back to 16 teams next year after a new player agreement in December.
