Max Scherzer Scratched from World Series Game 5 with Injury; Joe Ross to Start.

Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer will not start Sunday's Game 5 of the World Series because of spasms in his trapezius muscle.

Eric Stephen of SB Nation reported the news, noting manager Dave Martinez said Joe Ross will take the ball instead.

"He was in a bad place. He’s really upset about it," Martinez said, per Mark Zuckerman.

Ross has at least pitched well of late:'>>>

Max Scherzer is horribly competitive in a grand way; hell, he dreams baseball. This trapezius muscle thingy has been bothering him since the all-star break where he missed pitching because it was flaring up. I just assumed it was behind him. Bummer.

NOT trapezius, he said, this is nerve-related, in neck, connected to shoulder and arm.

Received injection today, which may or may not help over next ### days.

TRIPLE-bummer.
