S.F. Giants to retire Will Clark's number 22, and frankly, I'm surprised ...

great player, great swing, but I don't think his impact or longevity as a Giant merits such action.

Clark was a five-time All-Star in his eight seasons with the Giants and finished second in NL MVP voting in 1989. The former first baseman also won a Gold Glove in 1991. He hit .299 with 176 home runs and 709 RBIs in 1,160 games for San Francisco. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/27371890/giants-retire-clark-no-22-next-year

1. I lived near SF during the "Will the Thrill" years, and yes, he deserves this.

We were and are Giants fans and often went to see them and he was our definite fave and the crowd fav as well. He rarely missed at least getting on base. I'm not a big baseball fan, but my husband and friends were and we always had a great time at the games. I still support the Giants even though we moved from that area 30 years ago. My husband and I drink coffee from one of their championship mugs every am.

3 Bill Terry
4 Mel Ott
11 Carl Hubbard
20 Monte Irvin
24 Willie Mays
27 Juan Marichal
30 Orlando Cepeda
36 Gaylord Perry
44 Willie McCovey
If you look at the stats, plus the other retired numbers. I'd say no

But he currently works in the San Francisco Giants front office. So there's that.

7. The only number currently on that roster I would retire would be Bochy's

Maybe MadBum if he stays with the team AND has another steller playoff performance.

Posey? He has to re-discover that swing.

Both are close, but they need to finish their Giants careers with a bang.

8. Every SF Giant retired jersey number belonged to a inductee to the Baseball Hall of Fame

And I can say with certainty Bruce Bochy will be admitted to the Baseball Hall of Fame

Get back to me when Will Clark is inducted

9. 8 years? That isn't long enough

Just my opinion, but a retired number is a BFD, and double digit seasons seem like a reasonable requirement.
