SF Giants' Matt Cain lost perfect game to pitcher
(04-13) 18:16 PDT -- Believe it or not, James McDonald felt a little bummed for Matt Cain that he didn't throw a perfect game.
McDonald, the Pirates' starter Friday, slapped an opposite-field single to left in the sixth inning. Otherwise, Cain retired all 27 batters he faced.
"You think about it and it's like, man, the pitcher stood in his way of a perfect game? Kind of sucks," said McDonald, speaking softly. "But it happened."
McDonald's batting average was .069 entering the game, and it dropped to .068 after his third-inning fly out. When he came up in the sixth, Cain had retired 17 straight.
McDonald had a plan.
"I was looking for a ball out over the plate to try to hit to left field," said McDonald, who did exactly that. "I'm not a power hitter. I'm not going to hit a home run to right field or anything. I got lucky and ran in to it."
