Ohtani Starts The 50/50 Club! -UPDATED

Last edited Thu Sep 19, 2024, 07:58 PM - Edit history (1)

ESPN did a live cut in to the Dodgers game.
Ohtani was already 4 for 4, with a Homer, and 2 stolen bases.
So, at the cut in, he had 49 homers & 51 SB.
On an 1-2 pitch, he hit an opposite field bomb for his 50th homer.
I watched it live. Pretty cool.
5 for 5, 2 homers, 2 stolen bases, in one game!!!
==================
He ended up 6 for 6 and hit ANOTHER home run. 16 total bases slugging & 2 stolen bases.

He doesn't walk a lot. Only 77 this year. He's hitting .287, though a 5 for 5 day will raise that.
His OPS was .978 coming in. That will go up to, with 12 bases for the day. 15-20 points?
Thing is, he's a big dude (6'4", 210#), so 51 stolen bases is perhaps even more amazing.

I thought they had to be pitching around him especially when Mookie was out.

Jesus, imagine if he was we inning 15 - 20 games pitching.

Figuratively speaking, of course, because he just did it.

Nine games or so left, so who wants to see 60/60?!

Not sure about 9 more Homer's. He was in a mini-slump until today. Observers thought he might be pressing, trying to pull & launch everything.
Today might have made him right, especially since he hit that 50th homer to left center while batting lefty.

Shohei Ohtani’s latest extraordinary feat can hardly be believed
As Shohei Ohtani became the first player in baseball’s 50-50 club, he couldn’t keep his greatness simple.

As usual, Shohei Ohtani couldn’t keep his greatness simple. There is nothing standard about his high standards, nothing typical about the way he infiltrates every facet of a complicated game. So of course he made history in the most sublime manner possible.

It wasn’t sufficiently thrilling for Ohtani to become the first MLB player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a season. The Renaissance baseball man also needed to fold the achievement into perhaps the greatest single-game performance the sport has seen. It was as if Ohtani accepted an Oscar by winning an Emmy.

This is how to make an entrance into your own 50-50 club: Ohtani went 6 for 6 on Thursday against the Miami Marlins, with two stolen bases, three home runs, four runs scored, five extra-base hits and 10 RBI. He entered the game needing two homers and one steal, which is sometimes a week of work in this game. He exited with a viral memory and a champagne toast. ... And, oh yeah, he’s going to the playoffs for the first time. The Dodgers clinched their 12th straight postseason appearance. From now on, the best day of your life should be known as an Ohtani.

“That has to be the greatest baseball game of all time. It has to be,” Dodgers second baseman Gavin Lux told reporters in Miami afterward. “There’s no way. It’s ridiculous. I’ve never seen anybody do that even in Little League, so it’s crazy that he’s doing that at the highest level.”
