Related: About this forumSummer Olympics Poised to Have Record-Low U.S. Viewership
No major subgroup of Americans expresses high levels of interest in watching the 2024 Olympics, but there are notable differences in viewership intentions.
The largest gaps are seen by education, with 47% of postgraduates planning to tune in regularly, compared with 25% of those with a high school education or less. Those with only a bachelors degree (42%) or some college education without a bachelors degree (37%) fall between the highest and lowest educational attainment groups.
The viewing audience will be tilted toward higher-income Americans, as 44% of those with six-figure annual household incomes plan to watch, compared with 35% of those in middle-income households (with annual earnings of $40,000 to $99,999) and 28% in lower-income households.
Democrats (46%) are much more likely than Republicans (31%) and independents (31%) to say they will watch at least a fair amount of the games.
Older Americans, those aged 50 and older, are more likely to watch than those younger than 50 (42% vs. 30%). Women are slightly more likely than men to say they will tune in, 39% to 32%.

(186,651 posts)Theyve been turned off from the Olympics for a while. Actually root against their own country.
I saw that the Little League World Series is going. Fox News people love that because most of the teams are from the US and almost all those players are white.

(20,275 posts)You can easily (and accidentally) find out results of various events on social media in the morning. Some people won't bother tuning in to primetime coverage when it's showing them what they've already seen clips of earlier in the day.
A lot of people have cut the cable cord too.

I watched Monday's evening session exclusively on peacock and I thought it was great.

(10,653 posts)OK, I exaggerate a bit. But with commercials, reruns, interviews and recaps of the 2021 games theres not much time for sports- unless you like basketball, it seems. The daytime coverage is better - at least the equestrian events

(69,888 posts)I can't think of an event that wasn't covered in depth. They had the finals of the women's hammer throw today. Didn't show everybody, but that's not a big event since women only started competing in it 6 Olympics ago.
I admit discus was lightly covered, but shotput got multiple spot, so did javelin. High jump & long jump were covered from the preliminaries on, for both men & women. All the sprints, too.
Now, I wasn't nuts about the analysts they had for track. They took too long to start their comments (dead air) & with few exceptions didn't add a lot to the excitement.
But, the coverage itself, and play by play was pretty darned good.
Now, with some stuff on NBC, other stuff on USA, then all the Peacock stuff, some in realtime & others that already completed, it was a pain to navigate.
