does that mean that players like Phil Mickelson can't compete in the upcoming Masters?
True Dough
(20,323 posts)but I believe it does mean that the Masters is out of the question for Phil.

The PGA sanctions The Masters as part of it's championship schedule, but it is owned, operated and run by the membership of Augusta National Golf Club.

(2,133 posts)of what is happening with LIV. No one quite knows what is happening. I think they will not ban him. I do think that Liv will not get OWGR points.
They have to wear Liv clothes like fast food employees. I do object to Lipsyste dissing Tiger for his "racial mix". His mother is Asian.

(22,889 posts)It's sanctioned by the USGA and the PGA as an event in the Tour.
Ironically, it's probably the easiest of the major events to win. This is because the field of players is small and there are many players who are past their prime. It's really a showcase event.
Granted Augusta National is a beautiful and challenging course. But it's much harder to win the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship or the Open Championship in Great Britain. Even the Players is a more difficult event.
By the way, fuck Bonesaw Phil.

(5,758 posts)is a great example of hypocrisy and media BS. I have no love for the Saudis but the PGA, backed entirely by major corporations, is cranking their media friends behind the scenes to rag about "doing business with the Saudis". But nary a peep out of the media about those very same corporations who are the foundation of the PGA also do massive "business with the Saudis". The folks in the media know this is the case but we know who owns the media. The PGA has no problem "doing business" with Nike etc. despite the common knowledge of the slave labor conditions in China and elsewhere used to produce the branded products.
But the occasion of The Masters each year is an Orwellian spectacle for the media. The PGA has made this tournament its' "Super Bowl" and they reap huge money from that during the tournament and throughout the year as they bask in the glow. All that we ever read or see is about "beautiful Augusta" and the wonderful "traditions" of The Masters etc. Meanwhile you can be sure that the residents of color in Hyde Park won't get any media attention. The massive problems of systemic racism, corporate polluters and good old boy local politics have caused the admitted dumping of toxic chemicals there to go on for years with an EPA that faints faster than a certain Southern Senator from next door. That's just an example of one area.
The PGA and their media pals are calling out bad guys? Fine. But they don't want you to ask about that mountain of dirt under the carpet they're standing on. The Saudis are horrendous and should be punished. How to do it? In the short term nobody seems willing to pay higher fuel prices but making substantial transition away from fossil fuel for transportation is a long range project. We can give them a cold shoulder on the world stage but we have no replacement for their assistance with respect to Iran. It's a devil's bargain all the way but the media and the PGA would seem to have a good deal of experience sleeping at night after making such bargains.

(2,905 posts)Each major has its own specific rules.
For example, all previous masters champions are given lifetime allowance to enter. Winning the US open used to give a ten year exemption.
Most have rules like...the top 20 and ties from the US open, the top 15 from PGA, etc.
So. If they made the qualifying rules before they jumped ship, they will likely be allowed to play and keep playing each year they qualify, even if most of the year is in the LIV.
But miss the cutoff placement from another major and you would not be able to get in from being top xx in the world or PGA.

(679 posts)The Masters is a private invitational
The U.S. Open is run by the USGA
The British Open is run by the R&A
The PGA Tournament is run by the Professional Golfers of America.....the association of teaching professionals.
The PGA Tour does not control or decide who plays in any of them. That is controlled by wins and ranking.
All LIV Tour members can play in any major they qualify for.
