It's not as if I know a whole bunch about cricket, but this is showing up on Twitter.

Radio stations broke in to announce it and cricketers from England and the West Indies started the day with a moment of silence. This is HUGE in the cricket world.
I actually wondered why I didn't hear him in Pakistan earlier this morning but clearly he passed on the first Australian tour to Pakistan in over a decade. He was the greatest spin bowler in history.

and he had Covid last year

Here he is with our Brian - the World batting record holder for both Test Matches and First Class cricket. If memory serves me right, the only time Warnie was dropped on tour was after Lara tore him to bits in Jamaica and Barbados back in 98/99/. Shane was dropped for the final test match in Antigua. Two of the best ever.

9. The youngest of the 5 Cricketers of the Century

Named in 2000 as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Century, alongside Sir Donald Bradman, Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Jack Hobbs and Sir Viv Richards, Warne’s impact on the game is immediately apparent. His leg breaks, googlies, flippers and sliders bamboozled many accomplished batters and England were often in his crosshairs. He took 195 wickets at 23.25 with 11 five-fors and four 10-wicket match hauls against the old rivals. But there was also an affinity with England, with Warne representing Hampshire with distinction from 2000 to 2007.

After the deaths of Warne and Rod Marsh – who died late on Friday in Adelaide – the Australia opener David Warner tweeted: “Two legends of our game have left us too soon. I’m lost for words, and this is extremely sad. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Marsh and Warne family. I just can not believe it. rip, you will both be missed.”

To try and define a colourful character such as Warne by statistics alone is daft, but his were not half bad were they?

708 – wickets for Warne in his 145 Tests, behind Sri Lanka star Muralitharan’s 800 but well ahead of third-placed England seamer James Anderson (640).

1,001 - Warne took another 293 wickets in one-day internationals to crack four figures for Australia in all formats - again only behind Muralitharan in the international record books.

99 - Warne’s best Test score as a batter – he has the most Test runs of any batsman not to make a century.

8-71 - his career-best figures across all first-class and limited-overs cricket, in a 1994 Test against England in Brisbane.

195 – Ashes wickets, the most in the competition’s history and 38 more than second-placed Glenn McGrath.

96 - Warne’s Test wicket tally in 2005, including 40 in a memorable Ashes series, remains a record for a player in a single calendar year. Muralitharan is closest behind him with 90 in 2006.

1994 - year Warne took a Test hat-trick, removing England tail-enders Phil DeFreitas, Darren Gough and Devon Malcolm in successive balls. It is one of only 46 hat-tricks in Test history.

450,000 – Warne’s price in the inaugural Indian Premier League auction, where he was bought by Rajasthan Royals. He spent four seasons there as both captain and coach and led them to victory in the first season of the competition.

He was a loudmouth, a larrikin, a pisspot, a player and a big kid. I loved him to bits.

Years ago, when he was starting out on the Aussie first XI, I was chef at Collingood footie club. His dad Keith either started a commercial food supply business or worked for one. I saw Keithie Warne weekly for a number of years. Lovely guy, down to earth, really proud of his boy.
