IOC paves way for Russia's Olympic return

Russia could compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after the International Olympic Committee provisionally lifted on Tuesday the suspension imposed in October 2023.

Russian athletes were banned from participating in official Olympic team competitions in February 2022, and the Russian Olympic Committee was suspended the following October.

“The International Olympic Committee Executive Board has provisionally lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee,” said the IOC in a statement. According to the sports governing body, the decision followed confirmation that the ROC “no longer includes as its members any regional sports organisations in territories falling under the jurisdiction” of Ukraine’s Olympic Committee and had pledged not to conduct activities there.

The IOC stressed that its position on Russia’s invasion “remains unchanged,” adding that it “strongly condemns” the war and “stands in solidarity with the Olympic community of Ukraine.” It also said it would continue monitoring Russia’s compliance and “reserves the right to take any further measures if deemed necessary.”
