How Hamlet Was Really Written
Saxo Grammaticus (c. 1150 c. 1220) was a Danish historian, author and philosopher. He wrote Gesta Danorum (meaning: Deeds of the Danes), a 9-book history of the Danes which includes the legend of Amleth in Book 3.
In the 1200s the plot of Amleth was 'Amleth pretends madness and attempts to exact revenge against his uncle who murdered Amleth's father in order to seize his throne and marry Amleth's mother. ' Rewritten over 400 years later the plot became: Hamlet pretends madness and attempts to exact revenge against his uncle, Claudius, who has murdered Hamlet's father in order to seize his throne and marry Hamlet's mother.
The English version of Amleth is written in the second half of 1587. The play is reported as being performed regularly by Thomas Nashe in 1589 and Henslowe in 1594. Printed versions were reworked from 1603 through 1637.
Despite what a very entertaining movie says, the dates alone prove that "Hamlet" has nothing to do with Hamnet Shakspere (1585-1596) who was named after Hamnet Sadler, a baker in Stratford Upon Avon.
