Arrest over Salisbury Cathedral Magna Carta theft attempt

26 October 2018

A hammer-wielding man has been arrested after an attempted smash and grab of a Magna Carta from its display at Salisbury Cathedral.

Alarms went off when the would-be thief tried to break through the glass box which protects the charter on Thursday.

The suspect was held on suspicion of attempted theft of the document - claimed to be the best preserved of four original Magna Cartas.

It was not damaged and nobody was injured, police said.

The man was wrestled to the ground by staff when he attempted to flee after the attempted raid at 16:45 BST, the Dean of Salisbury said.

And what would you do with it once you had it?? I'm actually surprised that this thief managed to get as far as he did!

I've been to Salisbury Cathedral, caught my glimpse of this amazing and ancient document, but that's not the most memorable reason that trip stuck in my mind. I was part of a tour with my parents and grandmother and outside on the grounds there were benches - and on one was an older lady just sitting there and knitting. And the reason that was memorable was because right next to the lady was a very large sign that said WEED KILLER - made it look like it referred to the lady, LOL.

Everyone from the tour bus was chuckling about it and several took her photo - and then several of us started a conversation with her about why she was getting all the attention. She was a charming lady and had quite a sense of humor about it.
