The Tragedy of Being

I never asked for this
Awareness awakened from nothing sleep
I never knew just why
I was an infant from nothingness
All of it fully in vain
All of it spinning the circle of life
All of it ending for all
With the pain, deprivation, and suffering

The joys of childhood
Wrapped in separation
Discarded as refuse
By the highway of life
I never knew innocence
I never knew happiness
Never accepting my mother’s love
Never knowing my father

So why, on the treadmill
Rolling through time
Did I wrench horror from the futile
And disgrace from the struggle?
Why in the end
In this tragedy of being
Why was I here
When I had nothing to give?

But in the end
The truth is this:
The only thing more tragic than being
Is never to have been.
