The Leaving

The door closes
Will it be the final time
That I see my children
Alive?
As they go out into that brutal world
Full of danger
Full of hazards
Full of threats unimaginable?

Or will they decide on their own
To never return to this old home
Full of memories
They might wish to erase?
Will I see those shining faces
Of youth, of times remembered
Of joy, playful happy memories
Etched onto my own heart?

Every time they go
I wonder to myself
What do I do now
That they are gone
On the way to live their own lives
In the way that they see fit
Beyond my control
Beyond my advice
Beyond my years of living
In their first steps of adulthood

Deep regret and fear
Overwhelmed by satisfaction
That they have arrived at this point
Where they can leap from the nest
Floating out on their own
To the next tree
In the distance
Out of my sight

How I suffer at their leaving…

It was1987. Daughter had graduated from high school and was getting ready to start school at Rutgers. I came home around 1 a.m. and found her in the living room, listening to that song, continuously looping. I did not interrupt her.

It was her "goodbye" to the life she had led.

It seems harder now for me since they are the ones doing the leaving. By the way, thank you for reading my poem.
