Batman was my comic hero because he did not have super powers, but relied on his mental abilities to get him out of jams. I never bought into the super-power thing probably for the same reason that at an early age I was beginning to question religion. (unheard of for kids growing up in the Bible Belt)

I always looked forward to the 52 page "annuals" that seemed to come out every three months or so. (I may be misremembering the 52 page thing, but that number rings a bell)

It wasn't long after starting comics that I moved on to the Hardy Boys, and from that to the We Were There series, and then to reading history. Comic books were my gateway drug to reading that caused an addiction that led to two hours of reading every day for 60 years. "Hello, my name is Steve, I haven't read a book since last night at midnight...."
