Related: About this forumA review of "The Girl from Krakow" by Alex Rosenberg
The Girl from Krakow by Alex RosenbergI got this as a free Kindle book for being an Amazon Prime customer. Reviews are mixed. Readers either hated it or loved it. I am in the later group. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
One caveat, While there are several major characters the main one is the eponymous Rita Feuerstahl, a Polish Jew with Aryan looks. I dont think Mr. Rosenbergs Rita would ring true as a woman to many women. That aside the story and characterization is very good.
It begins in a train station in 1942 where Rita is holding false ID awaiting a train to Warsaw. Chapter 1 back tracks with us finding Rita as a poor law student who mets a young doctor. They marry but Rita and Urs are not a match made in heaven. She has a high libido, Urs not so much.
This novel gives a good inside of the horrors of the 3rd Reich and what it did to Germany and Poland in particular. Also there is an interlude into the Spanish war and the U.S.S.R.
For a 1st novel I found this a good read. Some of the reviewers had difficulty with the story lines criss crossing from Rita to Urs to Gil aka Thaddez. But it is stitched together very well. The ending couldve been better but it didnt leave me flat as it was bitter sweet.
