(12,298 posts)Shelly's book has long intrigued me. I see it as a metaphor of the industrial age- with the monster being the dehumanizing that mechanization brought to society.

(14,176 posts)Finishing "The Absolutist," a World War I novel by John Boyne -- a very unassuming story on its face, yet is powerful read concerning morality and ethics (both in terms of war and sexuality) in the trenches.
Toward the middle of "The Stand," uncut version. It's nice to have a book that I can pick up, read a little, and come back to.

(2,614 posts)Just finished The City and the Stars by Arthur C. Clarke. What an outstanding piece of speculative fiction. I had trouble putting it down. This is one of Clarke's first novels that I happened to find in a used book store. I am sure all his early novels are out of print but I hope I can find some on Kindle.
Next up is The Court of the Air by Stephen Hunt.

She is really old, born in 1927 and still going!
Have you read any of her other stuff? What did you like best? I've been going into a lot of countries lately through books, but can't remember going to Egypt yet...only in Abbot & Costello and Indiana Jones movies

(53,020 posts)She has two series of mysteries as Elizabeth Peters and I don't know how many as Barbara Micheals.
Here's her offical site: http://www.mpmbooks.com/thebooks.html
I'm going to both Jordan and Egypt in November, so wanted to read the entire Amelia Peabody series.

(813 posts)Wouldn't go out of my way to read more. But, wouldn't avoid them if they were convenient.
Peabody, as Emerson would say, is always on my list. Even in the muddlier later years when they are sort of ensemble messes, I still find enjoyment. Plus, a series I share with my youngest.
Have you read any of Tasha Alexander's Lady Emily series? I've only read the first one and it seemed like it might head into Amelia's territory.

M - I - crooked letter, crooked letter - I - crooked letter, crooked letter, I - humpback, humpback - I.
Used to know that as a kid but forgot all about it...

Sawyer has written a bunch of stuff, and I've liked it all. This is his most recent.

(1,895 posts)I've read all three of The Millennium series now. I thoroughly enjoyed them. I do think Ms. Salander is a wonderful character. As some others have said in some of the other threads, the first does start slow, but they really do pick up. I'm glad I got all three of the books so as to be able to read all of them.
