golden age detective thrillers from Germany. A very odd knockoff of the Holmes/Watson tradition. Lots of side comments by the author about the conditions in Weimar Germany. Eerie.

Later this author would be banned by the Nazis and would then put a bullet through his skull.

Available at Wikilivres as a free download and elsewhere. Don't know of any in English.

Penname "Max Schraut" who plays the role of Watson.

I just finished "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini. It was such an emotionally demanding book that I had to go to something less thought-provoking.

In a couple of paragraphs in the book, the discussion about city bonds and ratings were very insightful. Zone, rezone, tear it down, build it up; just keep the money in motion....(words to that affect).
