Fiction
Related: About this forumI want to recommend a series.
The author is Iona Whishaw. The books are about a woman, Lane Winslow, who moves from England to western Canada shortly after the end of WWII. She'd been a spy during the war, and is more than ready for a change. She rents a house, and not long after a body shows up on her property. I love the book, love the complications.
There are now 10 books in the series, and they have gotten steadily better.
Here's a link to the books: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=books+by+Iona+whishaw
And I feel obligated to say that I went to high school with Iona, which is in part why I started reading them, but even without that connection I'd be recommending them.

(26,730 posts)I'm very impressed at how each book gets better and better.
Because I know Iona, I sent her an email after finishing the most recent book telling her how much I liked it, and how I felt I was in Canada and in England.

(15,018 posts)As a Texan, not much on cold settings. Too claustrophobic for me, but this has a good mix of climate situations. Always looking for new stuff. Right now going back to old British detectives. the cosies are too sweetsie for me and I don't like the hard core either. Good luck to your friend. She is a good writer.

(26,730 posts)I will recommend another series I've recently discovered. The author is Paul Doiron, and the protagonist is a game warden in Maine. Very interesting so far. I'm only part way through the first of the series, but liking it a lot.
I will also recommend books bu Brian McGilloway. He has two sries, and two stand alone novels. They are all good.
Oh, and I will pass on to Iona that a random friend really likes her. Thanks

(113,131 posts)I just finished Brendan O'Carroll's autobiography, which was hilarious.
If you don't know, he's Mrs. Brown in "Mrs. Brown's Boys," one of the funniest things ever to hit UK TV. Excerpts used to be on YouTube, but most of them have been removed for language. Fucking prisspots.
If you get Irish humor, I recommend both.
