For those of you who have watched

Don't Look Up, I want to recommend the Ben H. Winters trilogy about a comet that is also going to wipe out most life on Earth once it hits. It's The Last Policeman trilogy. The comet will hit in about 6 months at the beginning of the first book. The last policeman is a man who sees no point in not doing his job down to the last minute, even though many, many people are just abandoning their jobs, doing whatever the hell they want in the short time remaining. It's really, really good and I highly recommend it.

Or even if you haven't seen it or have no intention of seeing it. The Winters books are not satire, as is the movie, but a look at how everything would probably unravel if we knew such a comet was on its way.

An alternate history where the Civil War never happened and slavery continued in the deep South.

He's written several others: Golden State, The Quiet Boy (which I've requested my library purchase), and Bedbugs, which I've reserved at my library. I'm likely to read everything he writes.

The Last Policeman trilogy. I really should read more of his books. Bedbugs sounds like fun.
