(19,117 posts)Many of the residents have the brown age spots, balding heads, crepe skin, bags under the eyes, wrinkles galore.
Me, I am fighting older age every day by wearing makeup, doing skin care(45 years and counting), getting in exercise, watching my eating patterns, not abusing alcohol, I never smoked, living as healthy a lifestyle as I can.
I am 71 with plenty of gray hair, but hardly any wrinkles or sagging skin, some spots here and there. I still go to Sci-Fi conventions, attend the Minnesota Renaissance festival in garb, play dress up at other times of the year, still sew for others as a business, etc. I do take some medications for my eyes and a digestive issue.
Even with Osteo Arthritis, I walk on average 15 miles a week. Work out at the Health Club 3 to 4 times a week to keep up good muscle strength. Being a Lifetime Member of Weight Watchers, I keep my weight well below my set goal for good health. I enjoy life, not merely endure it.

Age is just a number tho,,,, there are plenty of health issues that sideline us both mentally & physically.
I am working on more exercise,,,,

(19,117 posts)I found that walking not only relieves stress and aids in better sleep. I do my best process thinking when I walk. I also listen to rock classics by Queen, Bob Seger, Jimmy Buffett, Journey, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, etc.
Start with a half mile, then build up on it at a pace you are comfortable with. Most Smartphones have a tracking app for you to track distance and time each day. I have a Samsung phone with a Health app where I track this stuff. What I need is a Fit Bit to set up with my Weight Watchers app to track Activity Points. I track my meals each day and stay within or under my daily point allowance. The extra points earned via Activity add up and I rarely touch my extra weekly points I am given. I look at that as a calorie deficit I am not eating back in order to maintain here I am at each month I weigh in. I have not had to pay in over 5 years due to cutting out certain foods I have allergies like wheat based (gluten issues), beans, soy, white potatoes, most dairy except for Greek Yogurt.
I walk on average 3 miles a day in under an hour at a 3.2 mph pace. At least an hour total each time. At our Senior Living facility, there is a nice Fitness Center with a Treadmill, Elipticals, bikes. Also a big screen TV to watch my MSNBC shows if I do not get to the swanky gym. Some weights as well for various other exercises.
Keeping fit at an older age reaps HUGE benefits all around for a more fulfilling life and lifestyle. My Doctor wished he had more patients like me. Though I am having some issues with fluid retention that is affecting my Blood Pressure. I am doing some things differently to remedy that before I see him again next week.

(12,232 posts)I'm still working on my plan to be in better shape after completing my cancer treatment 18 mo ago and having a couple bouts of covid than I was before. IMO, I'm doing pretty well with it. My resting heart rate before was in the 85-102 range. Now it's between 69 and 81 range. Docs also had to halve my BP meds. I'm down 10 lbs (40 more will get me where I want to be). Have increased my physical activity (from 7 min on a treadmill to 25 min on treadmill in this past January to 25 min on elliptical, and 25 min of weights currently). I;m also a T2 diabetic. So far my glucose numbers have been the most stubborn and I can no longer take the med that worked so well for me (Trulicity) due to a bowel resection, 2 hernia repairs, and an abdominal wall reconstruction (set for 10/20).
I figure if I keep chipping away at it and moving forward, I'll eventually get to where I want to be. I wish I could imbue my older brother with the same desire to get in better shape.
