...
This dude right here.
2 barred rocks (alice and trixie)and 2 black rocks (Lucy and ethyl)
I bought a used coop and turned it into a 4 bedroom chicken mansion and after I was sure they were homed to it I opened the doors and my beautiful ladies now have the run of the back yard.
They spend the day taking dirt baths eating weeds and hunting bugs.
I got them at 8 weeks and we are around 20 weeks now.
Soon I will have fresh eggs and I have no shortage of people on my egg list.

(16,296 posts)my 11 yr. old named the chickens her parents had bought for eggs and when that time came for them to shuffle off their feathered core and go to that Great Roaster in the Sky (backyard actually) she was heartbroken.

PS. I name a lot of my animals that I end up slaughtering. It's just easier when talking about them than giving them numbers.

(71,825 posts)the legal fiction in chicago is that you can keep chickens as pets, but not as livestock. it you dont name them, it makes it harder to say they are pets.
not that that saved me from the city w 20some chickens, but it will help my case eventually.
arent they fun, tho?
my chickens are my pets right up until they are my dinner. they all come begging, and most let me pet them as long as there is food involved.
they just mesmerize my sometimes.
gonna hatch up some chicks this spring. i cant wait.

(6,476 posts)She'd come over to our feet and squat until we picked her up for petting. Lovely bird. I have to build a chicken house so we can have a few girls for fresh eggs...we've been collecting pallets for their lumber.
Chickens are wonderful, cheerful animals to have around.

(71,825 posts)if my guesses are right i am pullet heavy- 12-9. i'm probably not, but...
couple boys i want. a cream legbar fersher.
have a white legbar sport that looks like a pullet. think i may be able to get a few bucks for her.
want to try to get the spare roos caponed. have the kit, been watching the vids, and have a paramedic across there street whose wife told me he was available for first aid. says they dont have a first aid kit, they have a first aid closet. think he may just get a kick out of helping.
looks like 2 barnvelder pullets, and 2 barred rocks. most of the rest are easter eggers. have a black and white hen that i think is my prettiest girl. should have at least a couple like her.
will probably be able to sell off the extras. if not i have a friend w a big farm who takes any and all stray chicks, roos included.
have a plant sale coming up this weekend, and hoping i can stick a couple chicks to people.
the little bastards are so f'ing cute. like dandelion puffs in your hand.

(6,476 posts)You know all the names, breeds...I'm only familiar with a few. Sounds like fun, plant sale and chick adoption! So you hatched a little over half the eggs, do I have that right? I've never hatched any eggs...probably never will.
Good luck with your big day!

(71,825 posts)3 of the little idiots managed to squeeze under the crock pot that i am heating the brooder with, and.....
wasnt too happy with the humidity in the incubator, but didnt get my rear in gear to fix that. i think that was a big bit of it. and waaaay too much peeking. i was so good until the eggs started chirping.
needed to keep them straight, breed and daddy-wise, so i was scooping them up and marking them as quickly as i could. also left them in the egg turner. makes it hard for them to rock out. next time i will put them in some little boxes of some kind so i can just let them be.
live and learn.
dont know what i would have done with them all if i had had a better hatch. having a tough enough time as it is deciding how many to keep. in enough trouble w the neighbors and the city.
but what the heck, in for a penny, in for a pound.

(51,308 posts)I also have a really mean Barred Rock Rooster (free to a good home lol), and a guinea hen (who loves the rooster.) I have two geese and 8 ducks.
I haven't bought eggs in five years and neither has any of my family. Or friends.
I love my feathered friends.
