Sen. Mitt Romney delivered perhaps the most thorough Republican rebuke of President Trumps Syria withdrawal Thursday, calling Trumps abandonment of the Kurds there a bloodstain on the annals of American history.
But while that line has gotten a lot of play, theres something else Romney said that shouldnt escape notice. He suggested Trump got bullied into the withdrawal by Turkey and that he backed down.
Its been suggested that Turkey may have called Americas bluff, telling the president they are coming no matter what we did, said Romney, of Utah. If thats so, we should know it. For it would tell us a great deal about how we should deal with Turkey, now and in the future.
Romney then returned to the idea that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan might have given Trump an ultimatum that was met with acquiescence.
Are we so weak and inept diplomatically that Turkey forced the hand of the United States of America? Turkey!? Romney said. I believe that its imperative that public hearings are held to answer these questions, and I hope the Senate is able to conduct those hearings next week.

(2,432 posts)and after watching it, I asked myself: "How can any Republican who voted for Romney give an iota of support to Trump after watching this?"
I know, I know.... both candidates whom 80% of Trump voters voted for in 2004 and 2008 said Trump was unelectable, a danger to the world and had no business being President and they voted for him anyway. I know.... but I know many of these folks. They aren't stupid, and they don't possess a cult-like mentality. I just can't comprehend them and their ridiculous for support for a life-long con man and reality who host who has no history of interest in politics or social issues.
